Hi, I’m Barb
Nice to meet you! I am a Cuban American GRITS (Girl Raised In The South) living, working, and playing in New York City.
I have been writing short stories since the age of 9. As a child, I was inspired by Pippi Longstocking and I wanted to be Indiana Jones. I moved from South Carolina to New York when I was 17 and built a life and career in the film and television world. I sought out adventures everywhere from the far flung jungles of Southeast Asia to the urban jungles of Queens just outside my apartment window. Here on Substack I will bring you short pieces that are sometimes true, sometimes fabricated, mostly both with a little humor, maybe some good food, and a lot of heart.
In 2025, I am publishing my debut memoir A Little Piece of Cuba: A Journey To Become Cubana-Americana with She Writes Press, so you can follow along here for more details. I’m also working on a novel about a witch who is the good guy titled The Good Witch of Frenchmen Street and thinking about another nonfiction book about a woman’s connection between her mind and her body tentatively titled Becoming Superwoman.
